Four Ways to Give Your Kids A Giving Spirit

Remember Mahatma Gandhi’s famous quote?

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

Your kids have probably heard it, too, but they might not understand what it really means.

The holiday season is fast approaching, and there’s no better time to instill a generous spirit in your children. As you prepare for parties and family gatherings, make plans to show your kids what really matters -- how to give back and put others first. Together with your family, start changing the world, one step at a time.

Here are four ways to make a difference this holiday season:

Sponsor Children in Your City

Connect with a local children’s home to ask how your family can provide holiday cheer to kids in need. Sometimes all it takes is a hug or a warm smile.  Otherwise, you might donate new clothes, books or toys. One way to save money on these types of things is to get discounts at local shops using the new School Supporter app. Get your school on board by having parents pre-register for the School Supporter app before it’s time to shop! That way, you’ll get discounts when you need them, and you’ll be giving back to your kids’ school, too. Talk about a win-win!

Volunteer at a Food Pantry

As big holiday meals approach, take a family day to volunteer at a food pantry or soup kitchen. Serving others a hot meal reminds children how fortunate they are and gives them a chance to get to know their whole community. Even better, they might spread goodwill to someone who really needs it, and that’s better than any present.

Donate as a Family

Why not make a family pact to donate this season? All too often, parents give without letting their children be part of the process. Let your kids brainstorm what charities to support, and have each member of the family contribute part of their allowances - mom and dad, too!

Go Caroling

Go ahead and schedule a night on the calendar to go caroling this season. Even if you aren’t singers, you can still spread cheer. Visit a nursing home and, singing or not, stop in on strangers to say “Happy Holidays!” and drop off a flower or homemade treat.

It’s always a good time to give back, but this time of year makes it even more special. Pre-register for the School Supporter app today so you’ll have those discounts when it’s time to start changing lives!
